WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Oakmont Education provides options in various career pathways to provide hands-on learning from teachers with real-world expertise in their field. This career-based model helps close the skills gap while providing our students with an alternative pathway to earning their diploma. It also provides local businesses with the skilled workforce they need. Oakmont's students not only receive critical hands-on training, but they are also prepared to earn their certifications from the nation's leading credentialing organizations.

CONSTRUCTION

Construction

This pathway prepares youth to go into any construction field such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, etc. Students are qualified to enter both union and non-union employment options. Work-based learning is usually done at a residential construction site but can also include the completion of projects for the public good or local non-profits. Examples include wheelchair ramps, weatherization projects, kitchen tables, etc

HEALTH

Medical Assisting

This pathway prepares youth for a variety of healthcare occupations and with each certification expands career options for job responsibilities and environments including, with all 3 NHA certifications, hospitals, physician offices, and outpatient centers. Work-Based Learning is primarily done at healthcare facilities; however, teachers are encouraged to have students participate in health fairs/health screenings in the community.

Nurse Assisting

Community Health & Wellness

This pathway prepares youth for a variety of community-based healthcare occupations. The Mental Health Technician Certification certifies youth to provide care for individuals with mental or emotional conditions or disabilities, following the instructions of physicians or other health practitioners. The Community Health Worker certification helps bridge the gap between people in need of care and those providing that care. Often times this is done by breaking down cultural barriers to treatment while building trust and opening lines of communication. Work-based learning will be encouraged by local community health providers.

Direct Support Professional

Childcare

This pathway prepares youth to work in all types of early care and education programs, including Head Start, Pre-K, Infant-Toddler, Family Child Care, and Home Visitor Programs. Work-Based Learning is done at a variety of community resources and the credentialing agency helps identify placement options for students. The required 480 hours can be achieved with PT employment at the location.

HOSPITALITY & TOURISM

Culinary Arts

This pathway prepares youth with the basic skills needed to work in any level or type of professional kitchen. Instruction includes “front of house” skills and includes all aspects of menu planning from ordering supplies, recipe development, and serving. Work-based learning includes providing meals for low-income individuals with local non-profits as well as catering services for special events at the school.

Introduction to the Workforce

This pathway is designed to help students – in their first year at an Oakmont School - put the idea of “work” in the context of understanding key professional behaviors that transcend all industry sectors. Understanding the general ideas of profit, reducing waste, and increasing customer satisfaction are critical concepts to understanding communication and motivations with supervisors and various management structures.

Business & Entrepreneurial

Career Based Intervention

This option is designed for students who are too young to go into the Introduction to the Workforce. This “intervention” program is designed as a primer for younger students to learning how to work. The learning is predominately self-driven on the computer, but it does require up to 3 episodes of service-learning or volunteering in the community so that students have the ability to experience the focus driven / goal oriented nature of doing a job or project.

Helping a student earn their high school diploma is definitely an accomplishment, but it isn't nearly enough. To succeed in today's economy, students need skills to help them earn a job that pays a living wage after high school, affording them a pathway out of poverty and into their future. That's why we developed our Workforce Development Program, to give our students the real-world skills and industry certifications they need to launch a career in one of several high-demand jobs.
